[Review] Medigeek

medigeek blogMediGeek from Serbia is a medical student, an Ubuntu fan and an all-around blogger.

Now, where else can you find a medical student who’s also a geek and has the passion for computers and technology.

His blog [My Life’s Journey] is worth a visit. It is a perfect blend of the latest tech/software news and medical snippets.

Here are some posts :

Toe-tankhamun - World’s earliest prosthetic body part?
Bittorrent: Download 24/7 with your PC turned off!

Software: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 3.30
Security: How to bypass antivirus detection

MediGeek has his unique way of maintaining the perfect balance between life science posts and geek posts. Overall, I just loved his blog. In fact, I browsed right back to the very first “helllo world” post. [ I skipped all the medical and life science stuff though :D ].

Community-developed Web search

Wikipedia founder and Chairman of Wikia.com Jimmy Wales speaks during a news conference in Tokyo March 8, 2007.Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is putting the building blocks in place for a ‘community-developed Web search’ service that would rival search engines such as Google or Yahoo.
Wales told a conference of software developers in Portland, Oregon, that his commercial start-up, Wikia, has acquired Grub from LookSmart Ltd, a pioneering Web crawler that will enable Wikia’s forthcoming search service to scour the Web to index relevant sites.
Human editors would help untangle terms with multiple meanings, such as palm, which can refer to location like Palm Beach, or generic topics like trees or handheld computers.

‘Genuine Windows’ on Ubuntu

Mig5, a user at UbuntuForums.org managed to validate an Ubuntu installation as a genuine copy of Microsoft Windows and get to the download page of Windows Defender, using IE4Linux and Wine. As IE4Linux doesn’t support ActiveX, he downloaded the validation tool and ran it using Wine. The validation tool generated the code. Surprisingly, it verified Ubuntu as ‘Genuine Windows’ and forwarded him to the Defender download page. This means a validation bypass for the WGA validation. I bet MS would fix this in a matter of days.

HD : The difference is obvious

Although the HD specifications date back to the 80’s, it has just gained popularity now. High Definition videos are surely a treat to the eye and once you’ve tasted it, it’s really hard to go back. I stumbled upon this torrent at btjunkie and downloaded some HD music videos. I must say, they rock.. Same goes for HD movies with 5.1 audio. Watching movies in HD and with surround sound is a totally different ball game.
