SHANGHAI, CHINA: Google has launched a free music search service in China that will give users access to free downloads of licenced songs, while capturing advertising revenue for music providers in a market already infamous with piracy.
The service poses a challenge to Baidu.com, the #1 search engine in China, along with other Chinese search engines, faced lawsuits charging that it facilitates copyright violations through downloads of unlicensed music.
Google said its service would initially let Internet users search tens of thousands of Chinese songs by singer or song title on its website and download them from Top100.cn, a Chinese music website co-founded by basketball star Yao Ming. Advertising revenue from the service will be shared among Top100.cn and google’s music partners aiding in the search.
Google and Yahoo released excerpts of the pact covering their search advertising partnership that keeps secret financial terms and the extent of other ties between the two.
Under the deal, Google would supply Yahoo with advertising services (ads from adWords Clients) to run alongside Yahoo’s Web search. Yahoo runs the Web’s second most popular search service, second to none other than Google. Google and Yahoo have sought to portray the partnership as a non-exclusive arrangement. But the contract is heavily redacted in an area that covers “other business opportunities” and both companies are silent about how the sharing of user data between the partners could actually affect the privacy of Yahoo users!!
While the contract reveals details of previously disclosed plans to make Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk work together, it revisers four of the five other points in the “other business” section. Yahoo has said it expects to generate an additional $250 million to $450 million in additional cash flow in the first 12 months after the agreement goes into effect.
Aug 9, 2008 : Facebook Inc has blocked a virus that infected thousands of users’ accounts by presenting itself as a video message. The messages advertised links to videos on Google Video or YouTube sites and those who clicked on the links actually downloaded malicious software.
Users who unknowingly downloaded the virus via the video link were presented with an image of a court jester sticking his tongue out and rolling his eyes.
Although the virus affected less than 0.002 percent of Facebook population, based on its more than 120 million subscribers, that would amount to more than 2,000 people. Facebook disabled access to the links as soon as the information was obtained.
