CAKE: Call of Duty 4 is up and running and Congratulations to me, that I just finished the game today. However, it was all along with crashes, freezes, etc. It would run perfectly until the GX2 video card heats up to approximately 90c. Usually, thats in about 30 minutes to an hour. Depending. Then it would strat to glitch, then freeze and need a reboot.
I guess my biggest idea is, the video card itself is getting way too hot. I just got back from Best Buy, and the GEEK SQUAD said to check to see if it was OverClocked. Here are my settings:
Core Clock 600
Shader Clock 1500
Memory Clock 1000
Is this normal for my EVGA GX2?
I tapped it back some to 550, 1375, 950 to see if that helps a heat issue.
The only thing I can think of, it is a heat related issue with the video card not getting enough cool air over it or the inability to cool off fast enough.
In response to Stammers, please send graphics cards details, to find out whether or not you can run the game. Try http://www.canyourunit.com to check
My advice is that your CPU is borderline and may only just run the game itself, try downloading and playing the demo, to see if that works
In response to New Player, I have not had chance to surf the web on your problem yet, but can I just ask is COD4 actually runnning on your PC or is it crashing etc. I appreciate the amount of detail you’ve inputted, and I will try to assist in anyway possible
Again if anyone needs help post your comment and I will get back to you – but please do the common sense tasks:
check your computers requirements against the games (located at top) if your unsure of how to do this or what your computer has go to http://www.canyourunit.com to find out
Thank you for yoru time

Will Cod4 work on my computer:
Windows Xp Home Edition
Intel[R]
Pentium[R]4 CPU 2.50GHz
2.49GHz, 992MB of RAM.
????????????
CAKE,
I appreciate your time and interest to help me out. I am sure what we discover will help others isolate the problem as well. The last resort is to ship the computer back to the point of origin for relook. This is my 3rd computer from them, so I don’t think it is junk.
I did another test, CoD4, GX2 Fan at 100, and learned how to set the EVGA Precision Utility on my screen while I played so I can monitor what the temps were.
Side Panel Off it held steady between 84c and 87c under load while playing CoD4.
Side Panel put back on:
FPS fluctuated from 70 to 150 but my computer froze up at
GPU 1 94c
GPU 2 96c
So I am thinking that, the heated air inside can not escape or keep the video card cool enough. But elsewhere, I am reading that users are having temps in the 70c range.
What could make the video card overheat? How do I ensure the proper seating?
I pushed it IN and seated it to the rear, it seems ok…. But I don’t know what I am trying to make certain of.
Right now, internet surfing, Side Panel is ON, and I am idling at 64c with GX2 Fan set at 100.
I just put GX2 fan back to AUTO and it dropped from 100 to 45. Lets see how high it climbs in just 5 minutes….. Time now is 11:32.
11:37, temps are now reading 76c with the AUTO fan speed. AUTO fan speed is reading 58.
FAN set back to 100, let’s see what it reads in 5 minutes. Should be 64c again.
11:42, temps are now reading 67c with GX2 fan speed set back to 100.
I will now remove the side panel for better air flow. Let’s see if the 67c drops lower…..
11:47, the 67c dropped to 61c with FAN SPEED set to 100 and the side panel removed for better air flow.
This completes my test. Time to eat my lunch…..
It may be that the card is so powerful that in order to run it needs lots of power, meaning the temperature will climb dramatically. The option I can think of is to invest in some cooling for your card itself, I’ll have a search of the internet myself on your problem.
Just one thing to do check your card is firmly in the slot, you can never be too careful, I’ll get back to you about the search of the web.
If anyone else needs help just post your message, I am monitaring these postings.
Thankyou for your time

Ok – Another test was done. Ran computer at idle, no programs running. 72c. GX2 Fan set on AUTO.
Removed the side panel to allow more air flow and it only dropped to 70c.
Placed a 12″ fan directly in front of the GX2, about 8 inches away from case, set GX2 Fan to 100. Temp dropped from 72c to a cool 55c.
Is this what I must do to keep this damn card cool?
So, I guess to keep this card cool I must Remove my side panel, turn GX2 fan to 100, and use a floor fan to blow cool air over the video card? I DON’T THINK SO!!! This is UNSAT performance and efficiency in a video card.
Are there any other reasons why this card is getting so hot?
Thanks CAKE. I ran the system check on teh CoD4 “Recommended Website” Can it run, and it came back PASS ALL and recommended was PASS ALL. I did the run> dxdiag and my system should be fine.
I am sitting here at idle, only surfing the internet checking mail etc NO VIDEOS, NO MUSIC and my video card is 75c right now. I think this is too hot for idle speeds. EVGA Precision utility tool, fan is on auto and is reading 57 at the present.
I just over-rode the AUTO fan setting of 57 and set it to 100. Let’s see how low it drops….. 8:42 am.
8:47 temps dropped to 65c.
I still think this is too warm or too hot for idle speeds without a load.
Experts?
Right listen all of you before you post a comment.
If you are unsure about if your computer can run COD4 and you do not know what the hell the requirements are or whether you have them go to this website – http://www.srtest.com
To run the game smoothly I advise 1-2gb of RAM, and a late 7000 Geforce, or early 8000. As for radeons, I advise one of the new X series.
If you have any problems running COD4, post a comment, or email the technical advisers on the tech support page, I will try to be as helpful as possible.
If you do post a comment, please be descriptive, give your system specs (if you do not know how to find out, go to “Run” then type in “dxdiag” and you can find your system there) and also if it crashes – where it crashes? did you manage to get to the title screen? Does the opening video play? Does it not make it to any screen and just CTD (Crash To Desktop)
Thank you and I look forward to your commments

hey i have a ATI MOBLITY RADEON 7500 video card is it enough to run COD4?
