Rajiv told me today that BSNL was gonna roll out 8Mbps schemes soon. I had a feeling ADSL 2+ modems could handle only 2Mbps at max (Must have been coz of the 2+ part
).
Well, I googled for more info. and found :
Theorotical maximums of :
DSL - 8 Mbps
ADSL -12 Mbps
ADSL2+ -24 Mbps
ADSL stands for Asynchronous DSL. It means Max. Upload speed not equal to Max. download speed. In ADSL, downloads will be much faster than uploads. ADSL2+ extends the capability of basic ADSL by doubling the number of downstream bits. The data rates can be as high as 24 Mbit/s downstream and 1 Mbit/s upstream depending on the distance from the DSLAM (Telephone Exchange) to the customer’s home.
Ok, so it seems possible.. Im waiting for it. Go BSNL
Two new plans have been introduced by BSNL India.
Home 500 C and Home 500 C+
These plans include phone rental. Earlier the rental-free plan was only with 900 UL.
Difference of both plans is in data transfer, ie. Combo 500 [1.5 GB limit] is meant for low internet usage people whereas Combo 500 + [2.5 GB limit] is meant for comparatively high internet using people with minimal usage of calls.

Unlike the other speed tests out there that use 1Mb+ data as test samples, the BSNL calcutta bandwidth meter uses a 128K data test sample.
As a result, you get accurate results , FAST. It calculates the bandwidth using Bandwidth=(128*8)Kbits/(endtime - starttime) sec
CLICK HERE to check your Internet connection speed
Here’s my test result
Your current bandwidth reading is:
1.54 Mbps
which means you can download at 196.58 KB/sec. from www.calcuttatelephones.com server located at Territa Bazar, Kolkata.

Well, I’ve been facing this problem too. It’s their DNS Servers, I tell you !!
Here’s the workaround to get that fixed. Try alternative DNS servers like OpenDNS.
OpenDNS is a better DNS, free to all. OpenDNS uses its distributed network of DNS servers to speed up your Internet experience, increase reliability, improve security and make DNS smarter for users all over the world. OpenDNS is a zero downtime service.
OpenDNS servers : 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
Goto Control Pannel > Network Connections and find your connection under “LAN or High-Speed Internet” and change the DNS servers for that.
Click image below for info. on how to change the DNS server setting.

OR try the easy to remember AT&T / Level 3 DNS servers
4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5, 4.2.2.6
