Google’s Larry Page to get married

lucy-southworth.jpgGoogle co-founder Larry Page is set to marry his girlfriend, Lucy Southworth, this weekend on a tiny private island in the Caribbean.

Larry Page is the joint fifth-richest person in the United States. Six hundred guests are reportedly due to attend the ceremony on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands, owned by the best man, Sir Richard Branson.

Mr Page, 34 and Ms Southworth, 27, have reportedly been dating for over a year.

Sir Richard bought the previously uninhabited island in the 1970s and built a 14-bedroom holiday home there. _44285968_bvi_neckerisland_1207.gifThe island, which can be hired privately for $46,000 (£22,000) per night, has become a favorite of the rich and famous.
Although the guest list is a closely-guarded secret, the former US President, Bill Clinton, his wife and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, U2 singer Bono, as well as several other billionaires and Silicon Valley visionaries are thought to have been invited.

Teachers choose monetary benefits over truth

The producers of An Inconvenient Truth offered American classrooms up to 50,000 copies of their movie for free but they were rejected over fears that it would piss off Exxon-Mobil, one of the National Science Teachers Association biggest supporters.

In their e-mail rejection, they (NSTA) expressed concern that other “special interests” might ask to distribute materials, too; they said they didn’t want to offer “political” endorsement of the film; and they saw “little, if any, benefit to NSTA or its members” in accepting the free DVDs.

Gore, however, is not running for office, and the film’s theatrical run is long since over. As for classroom benefits, the movie has been enthusiastically endorsed by leading climate scientists worldwide, and is required viewing for all students in Norway and Sweden.

Still, maybe the NSTA just being extra cautious. But there was one more curious argument in the e-mail: Accepting the DVDs, they wrote, would place “unnecessary risk upon the [NSTA] capital campaign, especially certain targeted supporters.”
One of those supporters, it turns out, is the Exxon Mobil Corp.

Steve Ballmer talks on SilverLight at the TechMela, Mumbai, India

Rest of the story over at TechShout

It is a proprietary runtime for browser-based Rich Internet Applications (RIA). Silverlight was codenamed as Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere (WPF/E) and will let users create content related to animation, vector graphics, and video playback capabilities. From what we saw, Silverlight seems promising but then, it is a Microsoft product and skeptical users should wait for some time before using it. Silverlight has had its fair size of criticism.
