This Wraparound Gaming Monitor by Alienware was a prototype displayed at CES 2008 expo. It supports a max Res of 2880×900. This sample appears bleak and washed out. However, the commercial models which will be out later would hopefully live upto the gamer’s dream.

The multiple countries participating in the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which created the JPEG standard, have approved an effort to make Microsoft’s High Definition Photo format a standard called JPEG XR. XR stands for “extended range,” a reference to the format’s ability to show a wider and finer range of tonal gradations and a richer color palette.

The move is an important step in the transformation of the photo format from an in-house technology called Windows Media Photo to a neutral format more likely to be palatable to companies that don’t want to be beholden to Microsoft. However, the move also means that Microsoft will have to be more patient with its hopes to get HD Photo to catch on more broadly. Standardization “typically takes around a year,” said Bill Crow, who has led Microsoft’s HD Photo project.

Blu-ray outsells HD-DVD in U.S. for first 9 months. According to Home Media Research, sales of Blu-ray titles from January 1st to September 30th of this year now total 2.6-million units, while the HD DVD camp has moved some 1.4-million flicks in the same period.

Paramount Home Video said that “Transformers” had the biggest debut of any high-definition titles, selling over 100,000 HD-DVDs on Oct 16, its first day of release.

Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research, also said the 18-month period of exclusivity for HD-DVDs by Paramount and DreamWorks should strengthen HD-DVD’s hand this quarter.

“This definitely smooths out the edge that Blu-ray had in exclusive titles and it very much strengthens HD-DVD’s hand in the fourth quarter,” he said, but still expects Blu-ray will lead for the year overall. Adams predicts that for 2007 overall, consumers will spend $186 million purchasing Blu-ray discs, versus $91 million for HD-DVD.

One big factor giving Blu-ray an edge has been the popularity of Sony’s PlayStation 3 game consoles, which also include a Blu-ray disc drive.

I must say, they rock.. Same goes for HD movies with 5.1 audio. Watching movies in HD and with surround sound is a totally different ball game.
