Google Inc. has signed a letter of intent with Kevin Rose to purchase the social news site Digg.com for around $200 million, tech blog TechCrunch reported.

In contrast to Google News, where the stories are selected by computer algorithm, Digg’s news stories are submitted by users and ranked according to user approval ratings. It is known that Google was interested in using Digg’s technology to help improve its search results by having users vote on their quality.

Digg was formed in 2004 by young entrepreneur Kevin Rose who used a programmer he found online for $10 an hour. It is known that he paid $1,200 dollars for the domain name digg.com and $100 a month for hosting it, which is now ranked as one of the 100 most trafficked sites on the Internet by Alexa.

Digg has so far raised around $11.3 million in VC. Most of Digg’s revenue comes from a three-year ad deal with Google rival Microsoft, which may be terminated on a sale to Google, TechCrunch said. Ouch !

SF: Yahoo Inc. defended online search leader Google Inc as a more desirable partner than Microsoft Corp in a Wednesday letter that affirmed the Internet pioneer’s commitment to a new strategy.

Yahoo embraced its planned advertising partnership with Google amid reports that it had revived talks about a possible deal with Microsoft. The report, based information from unnamed people, surfaced despite Yahoo’s repeated rejection of the software giant since their intense mating dance began nearly five months ago.

Although Yahoo’s letter didn’t completely rule out a Microsoft deal, it stressed that working with Google remains the best option on the table.

According to the Mozilla foundation that released the new browser, the software was downloaded 8.3 million times in its first 24 hours of release starting Tuesday morning.

The downloads were so popular that they initially crashed the servers running the operation.

At their busiest, the servers were handling more than 9,000 downloads per minute and within five hours had surpassed the initial daily download of 1.6 million set by Firefox 2.0 in October 2006.

Tech critics greeted the new browser and recommended users to adopt it.

”Firefox 3 is the best Web browser I’ve ever seen. And I’ve been using the Web since before there were Web browsers,” said ComputerWorld’s Steven J Vaughan-Nichols.

Firefox has been rapidly attracting users since its 2004 launch and now has approximately 18 per cent of the market, compared to the 72 per cent share enjoyed by Internet Explorer which has the advantage of being pre-installed on the vast majority of computers.

Firefox is mainly downloaded by individual users and as of February 2008 it had been downloaded over 500 million times. However, since one user may download the software several
times, the best estimate for regular Firefox users is around 140 million.

The Internet will run out of addresses in another two years as only 700 million unique addresses are remaining for allocation out of the 4.3 billion available on the present network.

The addressing we follow today is IPv4, which is 32bit. This means there are 2 to the power of 32 , or 4.3 billion addresses available. When the IP addressing was developed, 4.3 billion was considered to be more than adequate, as the population of earth at the time was roughly about 4 billion.

The accute shortage of IPv4 addresses would see the transitioning from IPv6 to it’s 128 bit big brother, the IPv6. The Internet Protocol version 6 will have 340 trillion-trillion-trillion new addresses needed to connect not only billions of new users but also the trillions of sensor devices that will require networking as technology takes greater control of people’s lives.

“IPv6 provides more addresses in cyberspace than there are grains of sands on the world’s beaches,” quoted Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for the Information Society.

Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Apache/1.3.33 Server at blogulate.com Port 80

This message was plaguing blogulate two days back. Although it’s gone now, I was unsure what was happening as blogulate hardly even reached 10% of the 1500GB monthly bandwidth.
Curious to know what was happening, I mailed the Customer Support. This was their reply:

Thank you for contacting Online Support. Unfortunately I am unable to duplicate the issue you are reporting. Based on the error, the problem may be related to the number of visitors on the site. A maximum of 50 connections can be supported on Linux hosting accounts. If that amount is exceeded you may receive such an error. Unfortunately the only way to alleviate such a problem is with a dedicated or virtual dedicated server.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

It seems that GoDaddy’s max. number of simultaneous connections at any time is 50 for the Linux Hosting account.
This is sort of bad as most browsers use pipelined simultaneous requests and 10 users accessing your site can easily take 50 simultaneous connections.
It would have been been better if the 51th connection wait for a connection to terminate and then connect. However, the visitor just gets a 503 Error message. If it is a visitor making his way to your site from a Search Engine, it would appear to him as if the site was down as the bandwidth had exceeded and he’d just go away w.o retrying.
However, blogulate.com has had the same amount of traffic for the past 2 days and the error never re-occurred.

A class-action lawsuit alleging that Microsoft deceived consumers has been given the green light by a federal court. The suit, fi led in Seattle, WA, alleges that Microsoft’s “Vista Capable” logo program—used on machines prior to the release of the OS—was intentionally misleading.

Many of the PCs that sported the badge used Intel’s anemic 915 integrated graphics chipset, which was incapable of running Vista’s 3D Aero interface. Federal judge Marsha Pechman allowed the case to proceed based on a “price inflation” theory that consumers were tricked into paying more for machines with the “Vista Capable” badge. How bad were the Vista Capable machines? One email from a Microsoft employee said “even a piece of junk will qualify.”
